Birthday Celebrations

April 18, 2013
Yesterday was my birthday! My boyfriend bought me this 1,001 chocolate chip cake.

I had to go to Columbus to attend a study abroad meeting, which was required since my upcoming trip to South Africa is through Ohio State.  Since my friend Scott and I were already in Columbus, we decided to hit up Piada and Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams.  If you don't live in Ohio, you probably don't know what I'm talking about, but both of these chains have locations throughout the Columbus area.  Many people refer to Piada as the Italian version of Chipotle.  I don't know if the owners of Piada appreciate this comparison, but I can see why people think that way.  Piada is more or less set up the same way Chipotle is--you pick if you want a piada (thin piece of dough that gets grilled) or a pasta/salad bowl, then you pick the meat you want, and finally you choose all of your sauces, veggies, and other toppings.  I chose a steak piada with diavolo sauce and added artichokes, fresh mozzarella, arugula, and tomatoes.  It was only my 2nd time there, but I really like that place, as did my friend who went for the first time.  They have Italian sodas instead of only regular fountain pops, too!

We stopped at Jeni's in the Short North after our study abroad meeting, which is the original location.  I like Jeni's because they have unique flavors that I've never experienced elsewhere.  One of my favorites is the Cherry Lambic Sorbet.  Yesterday, I went for a scoop of Riesling Poached Pear and Brambleberry Crisp.  The Brambleberry Crisp tasted so good that I don't know how I'll ever be able to try anything else!  It is vanilla ice cream mixed with streusel and a variety of different berries.  Some of the other flavors they had were Queen City Cayenne (almost got this!), Pistachio and Honey, Salty Caramel, and Bangkok Peanut.

We had to rush back in order to turn in our Capstone papers.  I'm not going to lie--getting that 47 page paper off of my hands was THE BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER!

How will you/did you celebrate your birthday this year?
