May 2013 Birchbox Review

June 7, 2013
I got back from South Africa yesterday and had the best time!  I'll be sure to post about my trip and will include lots of pictures.  For now, though, I'd like to review my May Birchbox because I received this in the mail right before my trip and never got the chance to blog about it.

Here is what I received in my Birchbox:

My initial response is that I was very underwhelmed with the box overall.  I've had this Birchbox for awhile now and my sentiments have not changed.  From looking at the contents, I think it is easy to see why one might not be terribly satisfied with these items.

COOLA Classic Face SPF 30 cucumber Moisturizer for Face- Although I'm a pale person who burns easily, I'm not too excited about this tiny tube (.23 oz) of product.  Besides the sample size being pretty small, most of my makeup or moisturizer has at least an SPF of 15 in it already so there isn't really a need for me to be using this product.  When I know I'm going to be out in the sun, I'll apply something with an even higher SPF than 30 since I tend to still burn with only SPF 30 in prolonged sun exposure.   I will use the product, but I'm not wow-ed over a small tube of sunscreen.

Sumita Color Contrast Mini Eyeliner- At first I was happy about receiving black eyeliners in beauty boxes, but typically (and also in my experiences), many subscription services send out black eyeliners, so I have too many right now.  Even though I am someone who wears black eyeliner on a daily basis, I just have enough black eyeliner already from other beauty boxes.  I wish Birchbox and their competitors would be more original and would cool it with the black liners.

Joie Folle de Joie eau de parfum- This is the second time I received a perfume sample as one of my products in a Birchbox.  As with many others, I think this item is chintzy and don't really want to pay to receive items that I can get otherwise get for free.  I would be okay with deluxe sample sizes of perfume, but hardly anyone wants perfume samples to count as one of their items when they could be receiving something else.  Also, when I received my perfume sample in a previous Birchbox, I also got a full sized Model & Co. lipstick, so I felt that the two items sort of balanced each other out.  In this Birchbox, I didn't get any full sized items and don't think that the items this month were really worth the value of what I spent on the box.

Yes to Grapefruit Dark Spot Correcting Serum and Daily Facial Scrub- Like the perfume sample, this item is another free sample.  How do I know this?  It says it right on the back!  The daily facial scrub will be cool to try, but I only have enough for one or two uses.  Usually it takes me longer than that to determine if I like facial cleansers.  As for the dark spot correcting serum, I don't have any dark spots, so I'm not really sure what to do with that.  Haha...I thought about giving it away, but I don't want to insult anyone!  "Here, take this.  I don't need this product because I don't have dark spots, but since you have them I thought of you and how much you might enjoy this product."

Beauty Protector Detangling Leave in Conditioner- This is the only product in the box that I'm happy about getting.  The sample size isn't super tiny and my hair gets a lot of knots, even after using regular conditioner.  I like the idea of a leave in conditioner because I hope that it will prevent my hair from getting super tangled, which tends to happen fairly easily!  It will also be nice to apply this before brushing through wet hair.  If this product does half of what it says it is supposed to, I'll be content with it!

UPDATE: The sprayer part of this bottle is defective, so the product won't spray out properly.  I'm going to have to dump it into a different mini spray bottle if I have one.  Annoying!!

Overall: This month was a big let down from Birchbox.  There were no full sized products, which isn't anything unusual from Birchbox, but two out of my five items were free samples.  Many of the items are ones that I could do without and are just plain boring (black eyeliner, sunscreen).  At $10 a month, it is only natural that I compare these items to Ipsy Glambag because that subscription is the same price.  In my Ipsy Glambag, I DID receive full sized products that I loved!  From looking at other Ispy Glambags, I can tell that it is not super rare to receive full sized products like it is for Birchbox.  I am strongly considering canceling my subscription to Birchbox and just keeping Ipsy.  Birchbox was kind of like a mediocre relationship for me...It seemed great at first, okay for awhile, but once I realized there were other fish in the sea, I saw how disappointed I've been with Birchbox in comparison!  Birchbox, I think I'm breaking up with you!

  1. Welcome back! I'm happy to hear your trip was nice!
I agree with you about the items in your birchbox. But at least the beauty protector conditioner sounds really interesting :)

    1. Thanks! :) I tried using the conditioner and the spray bottle is defective, so it won't spray out at all onto my hair. I e-mailed Birchbox about this, so hopefully I can swap this product out for one that works better!

  3. I only get the Ipsy Glambag but I've heard your same complaints from other friends who do both.

(Funny that you got back in the country just as I was leaving the country, so obviously I'm just now doing some catching up!)

    1. My Birchbox was much better this month, but I still canceled it. Ipsy just gives so many full sized items that it makes Birchbox look a little on the cheap side.
