3-8-1 Candles: Banana Nut Bread

August 15, 2013
Ever since I found out about 3-8-1 candles, I really wanted one!  Their 22 oz. candles contain a mystery piece of jewelry in the candle so that one day when you're burning the candle it will be revealed.  I love surprises, and I like candles as well, so naturally you can see why these puppies appeal to me!  3-8-1 Candles claims that the jewelry in the candles ranges in value from $39.99 to $7,000, and all jewelry in these candles is made of high-quality metal.  What was holding me back from buying a candle was the price since the 22 oz. candles cost $41.99.  I know that you get a piece of jewelry inside too, but I wanted to be sure that I really liked the candles in case the jewelry inside happens to be ugly or not fit properly, so I was really excited when 3-8-1 started making 16 oz. candles, which they refer to as 3-8-1 Candles On the Go.  These candles sell for $30.00, which includes shipping, which I found more reasonable so I took the plunge and bought one!!

There is a wide variety of different scents to choose from on the 3-8-1 Candles website, such as Blueberry Cobbler, Black Raspberry Vanilla, Freshly Brewed, Mimosa & Mandarin, etc.  The one I decided on was Banana Nut Bread, because who doesn't love the way banana nut bread smells while it is baking in the oven?

The jewelry in the On-the-Go candles is different from the jewelry included in the full sized candles because the On-the-Go candles contain fashion jewelry which can be made of fake metal.  If you're looking for the higher quality stuff, you may just want to stick to buying the full sized candles, which I do hope to try someday if I'm satisfied with the travel sized version.

I'm burning my candle right now, and I do like the smell, though I wish it was a little stronger because I can only smell it when I stand close to the candle.  Also, I think I can already see my jewelry in the wax, but it is wrapped up!  It is not recommended that you dig through the wax to get your jewelry since that can damage the candle and maybe even your jewelry if you are using a sharp tool, so I'll just have to be patient. :)  I'll be sure to share what I receive in my 3-8-1 candle in a future post.

Have you ever bought a candle like this before?  What did you get inside?

UPDATE:  I wanted to post a picture of the jewelry that I got inside my 3-8-1 candle.  I received a necklace and a set of earrings.  I already threw the earrings away because they weren't wrapped in anything and the wax got so hot that it melted the plastic backings on the earrings.  The necklace looks okay in the picture, but when I go to put it on, it just looks misshapen.  The flower on the necklace is made of extremely cheap material.  It bends very easily.  The quality is so bad that I don't think I would ever wear this jewelry.  Just as a warning, the necklace was wrapped in foil and it started to catch fire at one point.  I never leave candles burning for long periods of time unattended, but sometimes I will leave the room to get a drink or something.  I'm really glad that I noticed it catching fire as soon as it happened!

The verdict:  The idea seemed like a fun concept, but I think I'll stick to buying my candles and jewelry separately for now!

  1. I've bought Diamond Candles before - really fun & smell great! They are not as pricey as these. But it sucks that the rings are always different sizes - I don't have any that fit!

    1. Oh, that stinks about the rings! That is exactly what I'm afraid of happening to me...I hope I get a necklace or earrings. I will check out Diamond Candles!

    1. Yeah, I really could not smell it from where I was sitting which was not far from the candle at all! I had it lit for at least a half hour, too.

  3. Unfortunately I've found 2 pieces of fake metal jewelry in the 3-8-1 full size candles, which is a bummer because that's the only reason I bought from them instead of other companies :( Going to try LoveLees and Sweet Smells & Trinkets next I think.

    1. What??! How disappointing..especially because they totally advertise that they do not put fake stuff in their full sized candles. I finally got to my jewelry and I'm not that impressed. It's super cheap looking and the earrings weren't wrapped in anything so it has been a pain trying to get all the wax off of them. Oh well, I tried it and now I know. I'd like to try a different brand out next time instead.

  4. 3-8-1 Candles is a total rip off! This woman just got her "temporary shop" set up and is taking orders and selling hoodies and shirts... BEFORE she even fills the orders of people who have been waiting since September... before the fire! It's clear she simply wants to collect everyone's money so she can shop for the holidays AND buy the supplies for her new shop. She should simply be making the candles for all those people she has waiting... who she promised would get emails offering a full refund if they didn't want to wait... she didn't even contact everyone! Oh, by the way... I'm the lady that won the supposed Diamond Earrings worth $4999! The jeweler gave me a verbal appraisal of $725 then I paid $35 to get a written appraisal and he generously appraised them at $925! You can buy these exact earrings on 1Sale.com for $279! I also found that 2 pieces of my jewelry from her LUXURY 22 oz candles are FAKE. They are stamped 925, but are not solid sterling silver! I have videos up on YouTube showing this. The owner of the company says that the rings didn't come from her candles... so I took screen shots of where I posted about the rings asking what the stones were and SHE ANSWERED ME... telling me it wasn't sapphire, it was actually Iolite! Yeah... it didn't come from your candle but you can tell me what the stone is in both my rings, right? Anyway, I'm sorry you wasted your time and money on such crappy stuff. The candles used to smell good... then, she started using all paraffin in the clamshell tarts and everything smelled like chemicals. The customer service stinks too... she refused to do anything about the fakes or the lie about the value of the promo earrings. Total rip off and scammer!

    1. Sorry to hear about your bad experience with 3-8-1 Candles. The difference between $4,999 and $279 is huge!

  5. So sorry your jewelry wasn't very good and that happened to you :c
But I'd definitely recommend Sweet Smells N Trinkets, it's a little expensive but they have amazing reviews, I have my first candle from them shipping over to me now.
Or Diamond Candles, they're a fun company too, I've gotten two from them. c: Good luck!
