Carnevale a Venezia

August 13, 2013
The first time I went to Venice, I was amazed by the mysterious masks for Carnevale on display everywhere.  Since my very first visit to Venice, I always knew that I would try to go back one day during Carnevale.  In 2006, I had that chance!  I met up with my friend Shayna a few days before, and then stayed an extra day for the very beginning of the celebration.

The beginning of Carnevale is marked by something called The Flight of the Angel.  An acrobat wearing white descends from the top of the tower of San Marco.

There was a parade with people dressed in Renaissance style costumes.

Finally, people started emerging dressed in costumes with the masks!  Being there for Carnevale was truly one of the coolest things I've ever experienced!

And, finally, a few sights from Venice...

I hope that I get the chance to return to Venice one day when Carnevale is going on again.  It is also my hope to one day attend the carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

Venice has the most famous Carnevale in Italy, but many towns have their own celebrations.  In the town I lived in, for example, kids and teenagers formed groups and performed a dance in front of judges.  Each group had their own type of costume, but these costumes were very different from the ones worn in Venice because they were very bright and colorful.  Also, the majority of costumes did not involve masks.  Instead, the participants wore brightly colored face paint.

Found Love. Now What?

By going to Venice for Carnevale, I fulfilled one of my life's dreams.  Is there any place that you would love to go that has a special event or festival?

  1. How absolutely gorgeous! I went to carnaval in Binche, Belgium and was equally transfixed by the mysterious and beautiful masks. I would love to La Tomatina in Valencia. Sounds like a giant food fight, with only tomatoes. Stopping by from Travel Tuesdays :)

    1. Both times I've gone were amazing! I heard there can be a mosquito problem in the summer, but luckily I did not have to experience that.
