No Cost Swap: My Sis and I Trade Off

October 2, 2013
Inspired by all of the fun swaps available in the blogging world, I thought it might be fun to do a swap with my sister Denise when we met up in Pennsylvania.  Since we are both on budgets, we decided to do a swap that wouldn't cost us any money at all.  You know how you collect stuff over time that there's nothing wrong with, but maybe it isn't to your tastes?  We decided to hunt for items that we personally had no use for, but would include it if we thought the other person might like it.

What I Gave My Sis:

Little Earthquakes and Safe Haven books- I really don't like many "chick lit" books such as these or books like The Devil Wears Prada, The Nanny Diaries, etc.  I find them boring and predictable, but my sister LOVES chick flicks, so I figured she probably would like chick lit, too.  She was so happy to get Safe Haven because she is a fan of Nicholas Sparks' movies and she lives in the same town as Nicholas Sparks.

Maybelline Mascara- This was a gift from my mom, but I don't wear mascara very often and already have enough to last me awhile from my Ipsy Glambags!  My sis wears mascara frequently and loved getting this!

Lip Drench Lip Balm- I am swamped with clear lip balm and knew that I would probably give away this lip balm as soon as I opened the Beauty Box 5 I received it in.  My sister liked getting this, as she doesn't subscribe to any beauty subscription boxes (Quelle horreur!) so she does not have a stash of these like I do.

Billabong Beach Cover Up- I bought this in the Philippines to wear at the beach, but then I never wore it because I wore different cover ups instead.  Since I've been back in Ohio I have not worn it because we are not by the beach at all.  I suppose I could go to Lake Erie, but it's not the same.  Since my sis lives near the coast of North Carolina, she is at the beach fairly often, so I figured she might like the cover up, and she does.  She told me it was perfect because she had been looking for a new one and that she was in fact going to the beach with her husband next weekend.

Empty Ipsy Glam Bag-  Now that I've been subscribed to Ipsy for five months, I have five glam bags.  I don't know what to do with them all.  Since my sis's favorite color is purple, I gave this one to her.  She told me she needed a little makeup bag for weekend trips.

What My Sister Got Me:

Gingerbread Lotion- Denise said this was just sitting around and she wasn't going to use it.  I'm pretty sure my next of kin is well aware of my lotion obsession, so bring on the lotion!

Picture frame- My sister doesn't "do" picture frames anymore and she informed me that it's not her "thing."  I still use picture frames, and now I just have to find a picture to put in it.  The colors match my bedroom which is purple and turquoise.

Perfume samples- My sis got her hair done at some type of beauty expo and picked these up for me.  At first I thought the one wrapped in purple foil was a piece of candy, but it's actually a sample of Beyonce's Midnight Heat, which I haven't tried yet.  It was so thoughtful of her to pick these up for me!

Blueberry Muffin Candle- This is my favorite thing in the box!  I love blueberries and this really does smell just like a blueberry muffin.  A friend of hers got it for her, but my sister told me she just doesn't like candles, so it was just sitting there collecting dust.

Green Tea Masque- Again, Denise was not interested in ever trying this, but she knows I love sampling different beauty products, so it was the perfect thing for her to pass along to me.

Cool Gear Plastic Cup- I like this cup because it's BPA-free and at my work we are only allowed to have cups like this behind the concession stand (our cups can only have one hole where the straw goes...no water bottles are allowed.)  I will get a lot of use out of this, I know it!  She said she loves this type of cup, but she already has so many because almost every time she goes to teaching conferences she gets another one.

The verdict: I think our swap was a success and best of all we didn't spend any money!  At first Denise was hesitant saying stuff like, "I don't think I'd have anything you'd like.  I really don't know what to put in the box."  She admitted after we exchanged boxes that once she started looking, it was a lot easier than she thought it would be and told me she wants to do another swap the next time we meet up. I'm in!!  :)

  3. What a cute idea! You may as well if you aren't going to use the stuff you got. My sis and I give each other things we don't want or need but usually since we have the same taste if I like something I tell her and she goes out and buys it right away lol

    1. I bet you two would have fun! Are you keeping Ipsy for next month? I feel like I should cancel because I already have all of the makeup stuff I need right now, but it's only $10, it's a great value, and it's so much fun!
