10 Beauty Mistakes I Used To Make + Tom's Giveaway

10 Beauty Mistakes I Used to Make

1)  When painting my nails, I didn't use to "wrap" the nail with polish.  I used to only paint the tops of my nails and not continue on and go completely around/underneath the tips.  Wrapping my nails makes my manicures last so much longer and helps to prevent chipping!  For step-by-step instructions on how to properly wrap your nails, I recommend this post by The Polished Perfectionist.

2) I didn't exfoliate my lips in the winter.  This led to dry, chapped lips that would crack and bleed.  Gross!  No one wants to have to worry about their lip splitting open every time they smile.  Now I know better and use Fresh's Sugar Lip Polish for smoother lips, and would also like to try out recipes for homemade lip scrubs.

3)  I was using toner too frequently.  As a pre-teen and teenager, I remember always using those Oxy Cleansing Pads in between washing my face in the morning/evening.  In my late teen's and early 20's, I switched to toners instead.  I noticed that the more I used the Oxy Cleansing Pads and alcohol-based toners, the greasier my face would feel.  This is because these products were too harsh and they were stripping my skin of its natural moisture.  Now I don't normally use any toner at all and would personally never use an alcohol-based one again because my face went from dry to greasy and the more I used the toner, the more I would need to use it.

4) I didn't wash my makeup brushes enough.  I know I'm not the only one that has made this common mistake!  Now I make sure that I clean my brushes regularly to wash away bacteria and old makeup that I don't want touching my freshly washed face.  I just use Sonia Kashuk's Brush and Sponge Cleanser from Target because it is affordable and comes in a handy spray bottle.

5) Okay, so this next mistake isn't one that I made myself, but a friend at the time made this one on me... The lesson I learned is to not ever use lighter dye over darker dye unless you know what you are doing!  Because of my hair horror story with this, I would never try to do this on my own and would now only go to a professional for this.  Basically, my hair was dyed a very dark brown and my friend offered to dye it a light brown.  She told me she dyed hair all the time and not to worry. Maybe she did dye hair all the time, but she was probably dying virgin hair.  Anyway, the result was disastrous! My roots were light brown and the rest of my hair turned this gross orangey color that no one in their right mind would want to have.

6) Sometimes I would fall asleep with my makeup on.  I made this mistake a lot when I was in my early 20's...mostly because after a night out at the bar, I would just come home and be too tired to deal with properly removing my makeup.  My skin would pay for it the next day and I'd have extra breakouts.  Now I am much better about always taking off all of my makeup before I go to bed and my skin thanks me for it.

7) I never used primer on my eyelids.  I made this mistake because I never knew that such a product even existed.  Now when I want some fabulous color payoff and when I'd like for my shadows to stay in place longer, I always use a primer first.  It is an effective step that can result in bolder, brighter hues.

8)  I wasn't using products with SPF on my face.  Now I always do because, after all, the only difference between a raisin and a grape is sun exposure.  If the moisturizer I'm using doesn't have it, I make sure my BB cream does.  I am sure to use products with SPF year round and not just in the summer because even on cold days it can still be sunny & UV rays will find you even on cloudy days.

9) Again, this is another traumatic hair story that I didn't make on myself, but I'm going to tell you about it anyway in hopes that this will not happen to you!  I got a hair straightening treatment after getting blonde highlights and it fried every single highlight.  It was so terrible that I had to get my hair CHOPPED.  My hair in the back was just an inch long, and I didn't want to have short hair at the time because I wanted to have cool updo's for my sisters' weddings.  The moral of the story is to always ask about whether or not the particular treatment you are getting is suitable for hair that is dyed blonde and to not try out a new salon for this.  My problem was that the salon I went to did not offer this treatment, but I found one in Columbus that did.  I feel that I was lied to by the hairdresser about my blonde highlights...I think he just wanted the money from doing the treatment and did not care about the damage it would cause my hair.  FYI, the place I went to is now out of business!  From now on I'm only going to someone I trust for this or will take a friend's recommendation if they personally went to a certain hair stylist.
10)  I used eye shadows with sparkles in them.  I guess this might not be a beauty mistake for everyone, but it is certainly one for me!  The sparkles would fall into my eyes at random points throughout the day and really irritate them.  My eyes would then water/tear up and ruin the rest of my makeup, too.  This might not bother some people, but for me it is a no-no to wear sparkily shadow.

What are some of the beauty mistakes you've made?

  4. I definitely made the toner mistake a a teenager too. Nobody told me it was bad though! And in my mind (at the time) the solution to the extra grease was more toner, haha. Lesson learned! And eye primer is really great... not every shadow appears bolder over primer, but even the cheapo primers help increase the wear time. A must for any eyeshadow wearer.

    1. Oh yeah, I did the same thing as you. I went from using one Oxy Pad a day to using like 5 and wondered what was wrong with me and why my face was so oily, haha!!

    1. I never started washing them until about a year and a half ago. After seeing what I wash out of them, I have a better appreciation for a clean brush.
