The Meaning Behind My Blog Name

February 5, 2014
Since I have been blogging for over a year now, I'd like to take the time to answer a few questions I commonly get about the name of my blog, Améliorer la Vie.

*How is the name of your blog pronounced?  What does the name of your blog mean? Améliorer is pronounced like this "UH-MAY-LEE-OR-AY."  In French the word means "to improve/to make or become better", and it is similar to the English word "ameliorate," which also means the same thing. La vie means "the life," so Améliorer la Vie means to "improve life/make life better."

*Why did you pick a name like this for your blog?  When I started this blog, I was feeling overwhelmed in life and had too much going on.  I started living a joyless routine and was stressed and overworked.  My life before I went back to school to get my Master's degree compared to my current life was a lot different.  I looked better and lived a healthier lifestyle.  I had fewer worries. I stopped and took time to enjoy life.  I did things that made me happy.  No one wants to be the person that *used* to have a good life and who lives in the past.  I decided that I needed to make some big changes in my life to get back on the right track.  The first thing I decided to do was to create this blog because I wanted to take some time for myself out of my hectic schedule and just have fun again.  Making this blog was the first step I took towards improving my own life because I was able to start something positive.   I'm still not totally where I want to be, but I'm getting there!

*Why is the name of your blog in French?  I have always been interested in the French language and culture and grew up hearing bits and pieces of French from my mother and grandmother.  My grandmother's parents emigrated to the United States from Quebec, and my grandmother grew up in a French-speaking household and went to a school where only French was spoken.  I was dying to study French as a foreign language because of my family's roots, so naturally that is what I picked to study as soon as it was offered in high school.  I ended up loving it so much that I actually double majored in French and International Studies.  Although I have forgotten quite a bit of my French, speaking and learning French was one of my greatest hobbies in high school and in college.  Since I was starting up a new hobby (blogging), I wanted to somehow combine the two together.

*What I like about the name of my blog:  It's original and when I was searching other blogs, I couldn't find any other blogs with the same name as I picked.  Before I decided on Améliorer la Vie, I thought about naming my blog "C'est la Vie," but there were already so many other blogs named that.  I didn't want there to be confusion, plus I didn't want those other bloggers to think I was trying to copy them.  Another factor I considered before picking my blog name was whether or not www.ameliorerlavie.blogspot.com was already taken.  I wanted the name of my blog to match my web address.
I also think the name is a good representation of myself.  I am always looking for ways to improve myself and my life.  In case you haven't noticed, I'm a big goal setter!

*Drawbacks: If you didn't major in French, it might be hard to remember or pronounce the name of my blog.  It's probably not a name that sticks with someone.
Also, yes, the name of my blog means to improve life and make it better, and I do like to share posts about what I like to do, but this is a lifestyle blog.  That means that sometimes I might want to blog about something like my pet peeves or a dating disaster, which doesn't directly correlate with my blog title. I could be over thinking this--I have a tendency to be pretty hard on myself.  I guess it's my blog and I'll post about what I want to, right?

How did you pick the name for your blog?  What do you like/dislike about it?

  1. As you know I live in Canada (born and raised) and I took French in school (it was mandatory) from grade 4-9. Here everything is written in both French and English and I have been to our predominantly French speaking cities such as Quebec City and of course Montreal. Although they make us study French here they do a HORRIBLE job and many kids here grow up only knowing basic French. They don't spend time teaching us how to converse but rather wasting time conjugating verbs. Hence I only know basic French but I can get by pretty well. The kids that speak fluent French go to French Immersion from Kindergarten where the whole curriculum is taught in French right up through high school.

Quebec is beautiful! One summer I took a trip up through the Laurentian mountains up towards Newfounland (but still in Quebec) and went whale watching on Bay st Catherine, It was beautiful!

    1. I have never been to Quebec, but have always wanted to go especially because of my family history! My great grandparents both came from Sherbrooke, Quebec--have you heard anything about it? If I ever go to Quebec, I would go there and of course to Montreal and Quebec City.
One of my good Canadian friends did the French immersion program and told me that she has weak math skills because of it. She said that she didn't understand the math terms that her teacher was using in French and it made her struggle, but her French is pretty good!

  4. I really love the meaning behind your blog name. I like when it's more personal than just something like "bows and hairspray" or any combination of random objects lol. To each their own, by all means... but I feel like a blog is an extension of yourself and that should be evident in every aspect. Also I totallllly don't have a niche or post about only certain things... but I knew focusing mine on Cleveland would be fun because I knew I'd post alot about that. So I'm a mix of a local blog and a lifestyle blog and sometimes I wonder if that makes it harder for people in other areas to want to follow my blog, but then I remember that I'm blogging for myself not other people haha.

    1. I enjoy reading about Cleveland on your blog because although I'm not from there, it's just an hour and 20 minutes away from me. When you post about upcoming events or places you visited, I love reading those posts because I have the option to go and explore them, too. Even if a blogger lives in a city far away from me, I still like learning about the attractions in their city...I guess that's the traveler in me.

  5. wow, your story for the name of your blog is way more classier than mine...after 4 days of craziness in vegas, that city spit me out and i woke up hung over and the name "vodka and soda" popped into my head because that's all i drank in those 4 days and that was the new name of my blog.
