Wilmington & New Bern, NC

April 14, 2014
The beginning of my week was spent in North Carolina with my sister.  On Monday we went to downtown Wilmington and explored the historic district.  There were a lot of unique shops of all kinds to browse including ones that sold clothes, shoes, jewelry, art, antiques, books, and sweets.  We visited The Cotton Exchange which had a variety of boutiques all in one building.  Neither of us ended up buying anything, besides an iced mocha at a place called Italian Gourmet Market and Cafe, but we both still had an amazing time hopping from store to store.  We also walked along the waterfront for a little bit and my sis paused for a picture with the iconic battleship.

After our little adventure in downtown Wilmington, we headed to Mayfaire Town Center, which is an outside mall.  As promised in my April Wallet Watch post, I did not go on a crazy shopping spree, though I'm sure I could have.  Instead, I just bought an Essie polish and a cute pair of earrings from Francesca's.  When my sister and I got back to New Bern, her husband joined us for a nice dinner at Morgan's.  They said that most of their friends tell them that Morgan's is the best restaurant in New Bern, so that's why we gave it a chance.  I have to say that my food was delicious--I ordered pasta with scallops and shrimp.  How can I not order seafood when the coast is so close to New Bern?

On Tuesday, my sister and I got up early and she took me to her gym on a guest pass so that we could take a yoga class.  The class we took was called Power Yoga and it was my first time going to a yoga class at a gym with an instructor.  We started off by lying on our mats listening to music and just relaxing, and of course my sister and I began to laugh uncontrollably.  I really thought we were going to get asked to leave!  Luckily, our instructor tolerated us and we continued on with the course.  My sis says that yoga relaxes her but that it doesn't work her out.  I was so sore for the next few days and realized that I'm incredibly weak!  Some of those poses were really hard to hold and my whole body was shaking.  I think I would be interested in joining a yoga class sometime.

My sister took me to a place she likes in downtown New Bern called The Accidental Artist.  There are all sorts of mugs, bowls, plates, and tea cups and pots that can be painted and decorated.  Then, the workers at the shop will fire them and they will be available in a few days.  Since there isn't a shop like that around where I live, I decided that I for sure wanted to paint a big mug that could also double as a bowl.  I don't consider myself to be an artistic person, but painting the mug was a lot of fun and kind of relaxing.  Unfortunately, the mug wasn't going to be ready by the time I was to leave NC, so my sister will just have to pick it up for me.  I can't wait to see how it turns out!

For dinner, we went to a fancy restaurant called Persimmons.  I loved the atmosphere inside the restaurant because there were large, glass windows so that we were surrounded by water on three sides.  While we were eating, we saw a couple of guys on their paddle boards.  I personally do not know if I would have enough guts to tube or paddle board on the Neuse River...it is full of alligators.  My sister's Southern husband told us that we were silly and that the alligators were tiny at "only 6 feet long."  I don't know...being a Northerner, I never had to worry about that and so the thought freaks me out!  Just last week an alligator ate a dog in Eastern NC.

Wednesday was my last full day in North Carolina, so we decided to go on a long walk around New Bern and ate lunch at Cow Cafe, which is pretty much an ice cream parlor that also serves a few items for lunch.  I told my sister that I love walking around downtown New Bern and that I would be taking advantage of that if I lived there!  My sis said she loves living in New Bern and it is the perfect place for her because it doesn't get too touristy, and the beaches are just a short drive away.

On Thursday, much to my dismay I flew back to Ohio.  My flight back was rather unpleasant. Some dumb guy was sitting in my seat, and I kept telling him that it was my seat, but he wouldn't listen because he wanted the aisle seat.  I thought that was beyond rude and almost got the flight attendant to kick him out of my seat and move to the window seat...I don't know... If he would have ASKED me to switch, it would have been one thing, but I even sat by the window and he still didn't even say thank you!  It made me really mad, haha... On top of that an obese man was right between me and the seat stealer and his legs were pressed against my legs the whole trip.  Thank goodness that it was a short flight!  When I got back to Columbus, my dad was waiting for me in the airport and he took me home.  He told me that while I was gone he cleaned the inside of my car, washed and waxed the outside, got me new windshield wipers, took my car in for an alignment, and got me two new tires.  He said that was my birthday present, which that works for me.  I hate having to deal with car stuff and seriously didn't know that it need to be aligned.  Then, my dad took me out to Bob Evans and I headed home for a nice nap. :)

On Friday, I had to go back to work and I subbed a kindergarten class that I often sub for because the regular kindergarten teacher had to do the screenings for next year's class.  After subbing, I met two of my work pals at an old firehouse so that we could play Bingo.  On the month of your birthday, you don't have to pay the $20 to play, so I couldn't pass that up!  The three of us had a great time, although none of us won anything.

On Saturday and Sunday, I worked both days and then last night my boyfriend took me out to Rooster's to get some wings.  All in all it was a great week! :)

  7. Glad to hear that you had a great week. Mine was hectic but good. That pasta looks delicious...aside from the shrimps lol (not a seafood fan). The town looks very charming.

    1. I was never a seafood fan until I lived in Korea and now I like just a few kinds, shrimp and scallops being two of them.

  8. Sounds like a lot of fun! I can't believe that guy wouldn't move from the aisle seat... I've definitely had people ask to switch or accidentally sit in the wrong seat until I asked them to move, but that's just so rude.

    1. I know, right???! I think he may have thought that because his ticket said 16 A that "A" meant aisle. I even showed him the picture above the seats that showed that A was the closest to the window and therefore was the window seat, but he pretended not to understand--either that or he was just playing dumb to get what he wanted.
