Don't Try So Hard

July 28, 2014
I usually wear makeup, but not always. The reactions I get when I don't wear makeup (from those who always have seen me with makeup on) aren't the nicest.  One weekend when I lived in Seoul, I got back from a trip late on Sunday night and overslept in the morning, so in order to make it to school on time, I had to run out the door without applying makeup.  That day several of my students commented and told me I looked "very bad."  One student even started to stick her fingers down her throat and pretended to throw up.  REALLY?  Two co-workers asked me if I was sick that day, too. After that, I thought I must look pretty bad without makeup, so for awhile I wore it religiously when going out in public.

When I opt to go places makeup-free, I also frequently get asked if I'm tired.  I find this kind of funny because I don't even wear heavy makeup unless I'm going out on the town for the evening, and let's face it, I'm 33, so bar hopping isn't exactly my cup of tea (or should I say beer?) anymore.  Some days I'll only put on eyeliner and lipstick and be out the door, but without those few lousy swipes of makeup I get, "Are you feeling okay?"  On the plus side, if I ever want to get out of something, at least I know how to appear sickly, haha. Another thing that happens when I don't wear makeup is that people tell me I look a lot younger, so at least that's good, right? Thanks, I think?

This summer I have been going without makeup more frequently, which isn't that typical for me. After three days in a row of not wearing any makeup and then finally applying some, both of my roommates commented on how I looked pretty that day (with the makeup, basically.)  It has been nice to not even bother with any makeup some days this summer, though. #lazydays

I know that I shouldn't, but I do feel more beautiful with makeup on than without it.  The media and advertisers got to me, I guess, but this link up appealed to me because I think it's just one way to help redefine beauty. I'm certainly not opposed to makeup (HELLO, product junkie!), but I wish many of us felt at ease letting our natural beauty shine through more often.

Since one of the rules of this link up is to say something that you like about yourself (don't want you to think I'm randomly bragging, haha) I'm going to say that I am pretty proud of how my skin looks for my age.  I try to always use SPF and to stay hydrated, and I think it has paid off.

Are you comfortable foregoing makeup in public?

  1. You look great without makeup!

I am not wearing makeup more often than I'm wearing it. I typically only wear makeup Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

I am trying to change that a little...I'm 37 and I feel like my skin is better protected with another layer on it. So SPF then a layer of makeup with SPF. No one told me my skin would thin as I aged! LOL

    1. Yeah, I always apply cream with SPF in it, but on days when I know I'm going to be outside a lot, I LOAD up on the sunscreen.

  2. I just went through this exact same thing yesterday while I was around some of my family. They all asked if I didn't feel good and insisted that I must be sick, and all because I'll admit it, I do look pretty rough without make-up and when I do nothing to my hair. But I mean, who doesn't (aside from Jennifer Aniston). But the way I look at it, as long as we're happy with ourselves, then it's all good. I think that you are a very pretty lady, and you have nothing to be ashamed of! Work it girl!!

    1. When they ask if I'm sick I just tell them, no, I'm not wearing any makeup. I hope that makes them more aware so that they don't do it to someone else!

    1. This summer there have been days where I've just been lounging around the house or running errands, so I don't bother. It's kind of nice sometimes!

  5. you are absolutely gorgeous! i dont wear makeup a lot, mainly only when I go out and I get so many comments from people when I do. If I wear makeup to work I always get asked what the occasion is. lol. I wear a little under eye stuff and mascara almost every day though, and if I am running late or not feeling well I skip the mascara and I always get asked if I'm sick or tired. Cant win ;) I know I shouldn't but I really do feel prettier when I have my hair done and makeup on. I wish my skin looked like yours!

  6. You know -- it drives me NUTS that women get comments like that when they don't wear makeup but men don't. I mean, it is SO engrained in our society that women should wear makeup and it really makes me sad. What doesn't make me sad however are these pictures... they rock! You're right -- your skin is totally kick ass! WOW. just WOW! Also, you have some beautiful eyes and that hair girl! WOO! I'm swooning! Seriously! You are SO beautiful... And while there is nothing wrong with wearing makeup, I think ALL ladies should know that they are beautiful without it. And these pictures -- well, they just prove my point! :)

Thank you SO much for linking up with us!

    1. I know...When I made the personal choice to not wear makeup, I got those rude comments, so then I never went without makeup for a long time. I have to change my thinking of, "I look like crap because I have no makeup on" to "I am beautiful without makeup, but can use makeup to enhance my features."

  7. ugh, some bitches are so rude. your non-makeup pics are gorgeous.

i don't go out without makeup (at least concealer) much; i at least have to swipe on bronzer or apply some concealer but there are times i just hide behind my sunglasses because everyone looks fab in sunglasses, right?

  9. Ugh I hate those comments hen you don't wear makeup. I wear it for work but I tend to go makeup free on the weekends if I'm not going out.

  10. I think you look great without makeup! I've stopped wearing it much lately, but mostly because I don't get up early enough to, and in a way, it's really nice. I feel less put together, but I also no longer feel to pressure to look a certain way. And I wear it infrequently enough that the "tired" comments don't happen anymore. So people just had to get used to the way I actually look.

The fact that people made those comments (and gestures) to you makes me want to hurt someone. That is just ridiculous!

    1. It's true that the people who said I looked "tired" didn't usually see me without makeup. Maybe I just have to go with that look in front of them more often so that they get used to it.

  16. You are beautiful with or without!

Sometimes I go with and sometimes without. I always try to at least put on some BB Cream and Mascara if I'm just going plain that day, but always get asked if I'm okay when I'm not all dolled up. So annoying.

  18. I don't think people are always more beautiful with makeup than without. You have a great canvass to work with and that is natural beauty but I think makeup helps cover the blemishes we all have. The darkness under the eyes or the small discolorations, pimples and whatever else is going on with our skin at the moment. Makeup can make you look flawless even when your skin isn't so when people see the flaws they assume something is up. If all women just walked around with everything showing all the time people wouldn't care but we are so use to covering it up people take notice when we don't. Wanting to look your best and feel your best is not a bad thing, we all try to put our best foot forward in life, by eating right, working out, buying nice clothes and getting our hair done. I think if you realize your worth and know who you are then you understand that makeup isn't the problem, self esteem issues come from within and makeup just helps mask them.

I don't leave my house without makeup simply because I prefer they way I look with it, but I also don't think I'm ugly without it. You know whats interesting to me is that men don't wear makeup, they leave the house just as they are pimples, wrinkles and blemishes in all. But what if men did wear makeup to help perfect their skin, if we were accustom to seeing smooth, even skin on men as opposed to their blemishes we might think they looked a bit "sick" or off without the makeup as well. I guess once we become use to something its hard to accept life any other way.

    1. You brought up some interesting points. I always think I look "bad" on days that I don't try so hard because then my flaws show. I think you're right that people have just seen me a certain way and then when I didn't appear that way to them, they were concerned. Now, if I ever got a complete stranger asking me if I was sick or tired, then I think I'd be pretty offended!!

  19. I forgo makeup all the time when I have to run errands in a hurry - the people at the post office aren't going to comment on my looks. At least not to my face. :P I've totally gotten the "You look tired" thing before though. My boyfriend is constantly telling me a look pretty without makeup, but once in a while he'll be like OH WOW YOUR DARK CIRCLES LOOK REALLY DARK, DID YOU SLEEP? It's not meant in a mean way, he just can't tell the difference between concealer face and no concealer face. I would be pretty shocked if a student or coworker told me I looked bad though.

    1. The funniest part of the whole thing is that I went to work plenty of days only wearing eyeliner and lipstick and without foundation/concealer. By the end of the day my lipstick usually wears off, so I'm assuming just the fact that I wasn't wearing any eyeliner is what caused them to react this way.

  20. I don't think you look tired without make-up on. You look beautiful! Are those people that are used to seeing you with make-up? Seeing something different on you probably was why they were saying it, not necessarily because that's what you actually look like (if that made any sense). I've only worn make up on my wedding day - but like you, I felt so beautiful that day. I really feel like it was the make up. My Husband has said I should wear some make up sometimes, but I don't know the first thing of applying it or even what to buy. Anyway - gorgeous!

  22. you are so pretty! though as a pale person, I can related to the comments about looking "sick"... I naturally have dark circles under my eyes, and being a pale person, they're even more pronounced. those kind of comments are still not okay - sometimes the things that come out of peoples mouths amaze me! (and not in a good way...)

    1. I do think that some of the "sick" comments I've gotten are because of my pale complexion. Usually I wear tinted BB cream that is a little bit darker than my natural skin tone. I alternate between that and this other foundation + bronzer, so when people see me without that, they are surprised. I've actually gotten, "You look like a ghost!" before.
