My New Bestie: Claude

July 1, 2014
Let me start out with a picture of my new bestie, Claude.  That's right I "have" a pet now.  Okay, so technically my roommates have a pet, but since I live with Claude I feel like I'm experiencing what it would be like to actually own a pet.  Minus the responsibilities and expenses.  Basically, it's the best of both worlds!

In case you were wondering, Claude is a long haired dachshund.  Claude fits the dachshund stereotype in that he can be very stubborn and hard to train, but he is extremely loving, playful, and loyal.  From the pics, I'm sure you can tell that he is on the tubby side.  He actually lost a pound and a half and he's on a strict diet.  I think the chubbiness makes him cuter, but of course it's not healthy for him to be overweight.  The extra pounds can put stress on a dachshund's back and lead to problems down the road.

In my life I haven't had much experience with pets.  My parents did have an Irish Setter named Tonya, but she died before I turned three.  I have a couple of memories of her, but nothing too memorable since she passed away when I was so young. When I was little I just loved animals and even wanted to be a vet.  My sisters and I tried to convince our dad (unsuccessfully) to get us a puppy for over a decade.  All of us told our dad that when we grew up we would get our own dogs.  My sister Denise has a beagle named Maddie, and my sister Melissa just adopted a Husky/German Shepherd mix named Jane this year, but there was always a reason why I couldn't be a pet owner.  In college we weren't allowed to keep pets in our apartment and then I went overseas for five and a half years and did a lot of traveling.  It wouldn't have been fair of me to get a puppy only to leave it in a kennel several times a month or for weeks at a time.  When I returned back to the States and lived in Ohio, I lived with my boyfriend in his house.  He is a cat person and was very opposed to getting a dog, so I never really pressed the issue since it was his house.

When I knew that I would be moving to Georgia and would be living with my friends Everett and Jared for a bit, I also was pumped because they owned Claude.  I met Claude previously and just thought he was the cutest thing ever.  Sure enough, since living here my love for Claude has grown because he's a great cuddle buddy and always wants to be petted.  He also makes a good exercise companion, as he loves to be outside and go on walks.  He'll often come into my room and "guard" my door, and he is useful to have around because he always alerts us if there is a stranger at the door.

Living with Claude for these past few weeks has shown me that I really am the dog-person I always thought I was!  Once I get established here and get into a routine, I'd eventually like to look into getting a puppy of my own.

I'll leave you with some more pictures of Claude and with some dog quotes!

Are you a dog person, a cat person, both, or neither?

    1. These pictures do not illustrate his true fatness very well. He looks even fatter in real life!

  2. Claude looks just like my mini long-haired dachshund, Sadie! She also had a weight problem, but she's much happier now that she's lost a couple of pounds. I wish only losing 2 or 3 pounds would make such a difference on my body, haha!

Glad you get to experience the doxie love. :)

    1. Aw! Sadie must be adorable then! :) Claude looks MUCH HEALTHIER since his recent weight loss. Before it was hard for him to even walk. His stomach was so big it was practically scraping the ground.

  4. i'm both! i have 2 cats here and a dog back home in Aus. I don't particularly want a dog anymore because I can't replace my baby back home, and its nice not to have to let them out and worry about leaving them etc. I'm a sucker for a cute face though!

    1. Yeah, if we are ever gone for more than 4 hours at a time, he will pee on the floor.

  5. awww so cute! I love dogs, especially the smaller breeds but I don't think I could have one...its just way to much responsibility for me at the moment and I'm not the type to walk around picking up doggy poop so I would probably be looking at continuous fines. When my friend got a new pup (I cant recall the breed but he was small white and fluffy) I took care of him for a while and I fell in love! I also spoiled him a bit when he was suppose to be training lol.

I have had birds, fish, dogs (when I was a kid so my parents cared for them), and a bunny. To be honest I think bunnies are the cutest animals on the planet! I want to get another but I travel too much and I am too busy right now, I wouldn't want to neglect a pet.

    1. I'm terrible at being "the bad guy," which would be something I'd have to work on when training a puppy. I find it hard to be firm (even though that's the best call) and would want to spoil the puppy just like how you spoiled your friend's dog. Right now I just let Claude's dad yell at him when he does something naughty, haha. I'd have to step it up if I got my own dog or else I'd "raise" a brat.

    1. That would be hard leaving a pet behind, but I know you'll make the most of your time with her! He is a great buddy!

  7. Oh my goodness, he's so cute. I love both dogs and cats, but allergies and strict rental apartment leases get in the way. I did live with a roommate who had a dog for a while though, so I made sure to steal lots of snuggles then. :P

    1. I think he is especially cute when he goes for a walk. He just gets soooo excited! That would stink about the allergies, and that's one of the reasons why my boyfriend did not want a dog in the house.

  8. Oh my goodness he is so cute! I just want to snuggle up with that chubby little body!!!!! You're right though, they definitely have a higher risk for back issues than many other breeds.

    1. That makes sense since they are more self-sufficient and require (IMO) less work.
