The Beach, A Dolphin Tour, and River Street

July 7, 2014
Well, I finally made it to the beach last week!  My friends Everett and Jared invited me and Ev's sister-in-law to drive out to Hilton Head.  We went to Coligny Beach which offers free parking.  We were a little worried about going because there was supposed to be a storm with high winds coming, but it ended up going off course and not hitting Hilton Head at all.  It was my first time ever going to the beach at Hilton Head, and I did think it was nice and clean.  Even though it was crowded, the sand didn't have any trash (that I could see) in it, the water was warm, and I saw only a few ratchet people, which is always a plus.  Ev brought beach chairs, and his sister-in-law brought a cooler full of snacks and drinks, so we set up for the day and just enjoyed ourselves.  I started the book Gone Girl and quickly got sucked in.  It's so addicting so far, and I just kind of want to not do anything at all tomorrow and finish the whole thing!

The only bad thing about my day at the beach is that I clearly SUCK at applying sunscreen and I got really burnt.  Portions of my legs and feet are still lobster red and unless I use cold water in the shower, I'm in pain.  I really think I'm going to buy that colored sunscreen for kids so that I can see exactly where I'm applying it.  For that reason, I had to take a break from going back to the beach.  Ev wants to go back this coming weekend, but I told him I was not game since I fear that I've already developed skin cancer from my first degree burns. (Just being a drama queen!)  He persuaded me to go back, but only because we are going to all pitch in and buy a big beach umbrella so that way we have the option of getting some shade and just read our books.

On Thursday I also had the pleasure of returning to Hilton Head to meet up with Rachael and her lovely friends Hallie, Meredith, and Sarah.  We met for dinner at Wild Wing Cafe, and then went on a dolphin sunset cruise.  It started to rain, so we thought the tour might be canceled, but we got lucky and it cleared up.  I thought that we might see like one fin of a dolphin because they said that seeing dolphins was guaranteed, but we saw dolphins plenty of times.  It was fun trying to spot one, and the cruise itself was also relaxing.  Afterwards, we stopped at Salty Dog Ice Cream and got a sweet treat.  Their Cherry Almond ice cream was really tasty, although kind of on the pricey side...but it's Hilton Head and everything is a little expensive, so I was prepared for it.

Oh, yes, and BREAKING NEWS here!  Rachael installed an Emoji App on my phone since I'm behind in the times with trends like that.  Now I will no longer have to wonder what those empty boxes I receive in text messages might be.

For the Fourth of July, Ev and I went down to River Street in downtown Savannah to meet up with Rachael and her pals.  We chatted, got some ice cream, and watched the fireworks display.  Overall, it was a great time and the first Fourth of July that I didn't have to work in years!!

On Saturday night, Everett downloaded a walking tour of Savannah and took us to two of Savannah's squares.  Johnson Square, the first and the largest square, was built in honor of Nathaniel Greene, who was a hero from the Revolutionary War.  From Johnson Square, which is on Bull St. and St. Julian St., we could see the Christ Episcopal Church.  Ev told me that his grandma (who lived in Savannah basically her whole life) told him that's were all the really rich people went to church.  Next, we stopped at Ellis Square, which once served as the town's marketplace.  The square got covered up with buildings, but has since been reclaimed and restored.  There are benches on the sides and people were out having pizza and picnics.  Now Ev says he wants to be a tour guide in Savannah.  I laughed at first, but he has been studying a manual all day long!  We'll see!  After our little tour, we headed to River Street and played darts in a dive bar, and Ev sang some karaoke.  Then we stopped at Wet Willies which is a frozen daiquiri bar for a few minutes before we decided to go back.

I had a great week and awesome holiday weekend, which is something I'm not used to!! I LOVE NOT WORKING HOLIDAYS for a change!

Looks like fun! I got sucked in when I was reading Gone Girl too, I am excited to see what they do with the film! You are so lucky to have seen a dolphin, Whenever I am on vacay or on a cruise I constantly look out for them, they are actually my favorite animals, have been since I was a kid but I have never been so lucky :( I did go whale watching in Quebec though which was amazing!!

I'm on page 326 now and just want to not do anything else the rest of the night and finish the whole thing! I will definitely be watching the movie. Actually, I want to check out the cast right now.
Too bad you haven't ever spotted a dolphin. I want to swim with them one day like my sister got to...that's on my bucket list.

I wish we could have seen their faces, but even just spotting parts of them was cool.

I am, but I'm not even going out as much as I would like because I'm trying to save money in case it takes me longer than anticipated to find a job!

It was super fun!! I would go again for sure!

They are! I also got scalp burn, but I don't necessarily want to try to apply sunscreen to that area next time...It would be a big greasy mess!

It was! I was so glad that they didn't cancel the dolphin tour. It seemed like they were going to there for a little bit!
